Activity: Snowshoe Hike

Date: Monday January 18 (Martin Luther King's Birthday)
Start Time: 8:00am
Expected Return time: 5:00pm
Meet at Rozelle's

Activity Details: 1 to 3-mi snowshoe hike at Mt. Pinos
        Backpack lunch cooked at 1/2 way point to practice snow camp cooking
        Will rent snowshoes from Sports Chalet the day before @ $8/pair
            or Mt Pinos Winter Sports $5/pr the day of the hike

Hike starts at: Mt. Pinos Parking Lot
Hike plan: Hike to peak, Cook Lunch, Practice snow caves, return.
    (plan subject to modification to fit snow & hiker conditions)

Bring: Boots, Layered clothing, Jacket, Gloves, Water Bottle, Snow Hat, etc.

Cost: $10 includes snowshoe rental, sit pad & hot lunch - bring $5 or so for snack on return

Snowshoe Hike Itinerary

8:00                 -   Meet at Rozelle’s
8:30                 -   Leave
9:30 – 10:00   -  Rent Snow shoes
10:30              -   Arrive at Pinos Parking Lot
11:00              -   Start Hike
12:30              -   Lunch at peak
1:30 – 2:30     -  Snow Caves / Fun
2:30                 -   Hike back
4:00                 -   Leave Parking Lot
4:30 – 5:00     -  Return rentals / Snacks
6:00                 -   Back at Rozelle’s 

Gear List

Waterproof Boots (insulated are best)
Heavy socks – (2-pair layered)
Clothes for snow - layered – you get hot hiking
Jacket
Water repellant pants (like bibs) if really snowy
Hat – your head loses lots of heat
Gloves
Dry socks, etc. for drive back
Sit-Pad (crew will supply)
Eating gear (plastic bowl, spoon, fork, insulated cup)
Sun Glasses
Sun Block

  1. Write newsletter article and email to Judy Osborne (no Jan newsletter)
  2. Research where enough snowshoes can be rented, cost and availability - Done
  3. Research possible trails for snow shoeing - Done - to try Mt. Pinos
      possibilities:  Mt. Pinos,  Mt. Waterman, ????? - check internet & people
  4. Select trail site with back-up alternatives - Done - Crew hike if no snow
  5. Plan itenary for hike: gather, drive there, suit-up, hike/navigate,
    lunch (hot meal with backpack stoves), return - Dan
  6. Plan lunch menu & equipment list - Dan

  7. Make phone calls (in conjunction with calling about Jan 10 meeting) to get preliminary count of how many going - Dan/Brian/Chris/Robbyn (DONE)
  8. Reserve snowshoes - Dan R. (called)
  9. Make flier, including activity details, cost (snowshoes & lunch), required clothing & gear, etc for Jan 10 meeting - Dan/Mr. Rozelle - DONE
  10. Make release slip for Jan 10 meeting -Dan - DONE
  11. Email flier to Mr. Rozelle for posting on Web - Dan DONE
  12. Make presentation on trip at Jan 10 meeting - preparations, etc. - Dan R. (DONE - Jeff T.)

  14. File Tour Permit after get prelim count at meeting and driver list - Mr. Rozelle
  15. Line up drivers - Dan R. & committee
  16. Call all expected to confirm going, release slip signed, $'s, Time - committee
  17. Make checklist for collecting $ & release slips - Dan R.
  18. Pick-up snowshoes, arrange with leaders to have extra cold weather gear available
    on morning of hike - Dan R. & committee
  19. Day of Trip - collect release slips, $'s
  20. Run check to see if all crew has proper equipment - if not see if can cover with leader's loaners
  21. Drive to trail site
